Jjigae (Korean stews)

Jjigae covers Korea's stew family — kimchi-jjigae, budae-jjigae, saengtae-jjigae, and more — a shared pot of broth and ingredients meant to be eaten with rice, usually alongside a main grilled or fried dish rather than as the only order. On our list of 18, that pairing shows clearly: ten of the entries are primarily grill houses that also serve a stew, and six are soup-and-stew (gukbap) shops.

Five to start with

  1. Gwonyeongsu Daega Jeongol Gyeongdong Market · 전골 · ₩15–40k — A jeongol specialist inside Gyeongdong Market, Seoul's largest traditional herbal-medicine and produce market, cooking tripe and dumpling hot pots tableside for the market's communal dining stalls.
  2. Ujeong Cheongdam-dong · 한식 한우 · over ₩40k — Woojeong is a Cheongdam-dong hanwoo restaurant known for a Blue Ribbon Award-winning take on Seoul-style bulgogi, gopchang jeongol (beef-intestine hot pot), and a limited-quantity deunggol (beef spinal marrow) dish.
  3. Chodang Jongno 6-ga · 백반 · under ₩15k — A decades-old Jeolla-style home-cooking spot tucked in the alleys near Jongno 6-ga's flower and fabric markets, known for braised mackerel, spicy pork ssambap, and hearty banchan spreads at old-school prices.
  4. Nadeulmok Sikdang Yangpyeong-dong · 삼겹살(야장 가맥집) · ₩15–40k — A no-frills mat-jip attached to a corner mart near the Yangpyeong-dong riverside, Nadeulmok Sikdang is known for open-air samgyeopsal grilled at plastic tables under the trees, alongside simple staples like ramyeon, gimbap, and bibim guksu.

The remaining two split between a Rice & Home-style baekban spot and a Drinking Spots pocha. Locations are scattered one-per-neighborhood rather than clustered — Gyeongdong Market, Guro Digital Complex, Bukchang-dong, Daehangno, and Cheongdam-dong each register a single entry, which tracks with jjigae being a side order almost everywhere rather than a destination dish in any one district.

Pricing leans mid-range: 12 of 18 fall in the ₩₩ band, five in the cheaper ₩ tier, and one crosses into ₩₩₩. 16 of the 18 are walk-in, and nine sit off the tourist radar. No listing here carries official recognition.

Nangman Budae-jjigae near Guro Digital Complex is a weekday-lunch-only shop whose cheese-and-garlic budae-jjigae draws a queue right at noon, while Busan Galmaegi in Bukchang-dong specializes in saengtae-jjigae made with fresh, not frozen, pollack.
