Do you need reservations in Seoul?
Short answer: you usually don't need a reservation. Of the 440 verified restaurants on our list, 387 (88%) are walk-in — you show up, maybe queue, and eat. Only 14 are reservation-first, and 39 use a waitlist app. Here is how each mode works when you don't have a Korean phone number.
1. Walk-in (the default)
Most Korean restaurants — especially the soup houses, grills, and noodle shops locals love — take no reservations at all. If there's a line, you join it. Lines move fast because Korean table turnover is fast; a 20-person queue at a gukbap house is often a 25-minute wait, not an hour. Peak dodge: lunch before 11:40 or after 13:30, dinner before 18:00.
2. Tabling (테이블링) — the waitlist kiosk
Popular queue-heavy spots often use Tabling: instead of physically standing in line, you register and wait nearby. The app itself needs a Korean phone number — but almost every Tabling restaurant has a kiosk at the door where you can join the waitlist on site. Put in any reachable number or just watch the queue screen; staff call the ticket number out loud.
3. CatchTable (캐치테이블) — the reservation app
Reservation-first restaurants in Seoul mostly run on CatchTable. The good news:CatchTable Global is the English version made for visitors — sign up with a foreign number and book directly. Note that hot restaurants release slots at fixed times and sell out in minutes; check each restaurant's release schedule inside the app.
4. Naver Reservation and phone-only
Some places use Naver Booking (needs a Naver account — sign-up works with a foreign email) or take reservations only by phone, in Korean. For phone-only spots, asking your hotel front desk to call is the standard move — it's a normal request in Seoul.
