Mangwon-dong: long queues for soup, none at all for the newer cafés

Three of the nine Mangwon-dong spots here reliably produce a line, and locals plan around it rather than avoid it. Sundae Ilbeonji's sundae-guk can run close to an hour at lunch and dinner peaks, with only a mid-afternoon window offering a walk-in table. Ildeung Sikdang's haejangguk has drawn queues on ordinary weekday mornings since Sung Si-kyung featured it on Muktende — twice, in fact — and Kim Three Meals covered it separately. Ichizen, a tempura-rice-bowl (tendon) counter open since 2017, fills up on weekends for the same reason: fresh-fried tempura made to order, one bowl at a time.

Two noodle-and-dumpling shops move faster. Mangwondong Kaljjamppong sells knife-cut noodle jjamppong, jjajang, and mini tangsuyuk all under ₩10,000, with waits that clear inside a normal lunch break; Mandu-ran, open since 2018, does pan-fried gyoza and cold liangban noodles at the same pace. Neither carries the reputation of the soup shops nearby, but both are walk-in without the drama.

The newest arrivals skip the queue question altogether. Portrait Coffee Bar, open since 2020, pairs specialty coffee with seasonal bingsu; Gongmyeong's Mangwon "chaekppang" branch, open since 2025, is a multi-floor dessert café built around a whole-melon showpiece cake. Both were visited on the same Mangwon-dong café-tour video rather than a single-venue review — a lighter kind of credit than the soup shops' repeat coverage, but the newest data point in this batch. Monggol Saeng Sogeumgui, a salt-grilled pork counter open since 2011, is the ninth: 200g of fresh pork for ₩16,000, credited by Muktende.

Questions

Which Mangwon-dong spot has the longest wait?

Sundae Ilbeonji, Ildeung Sikdang, and Ichizen all run long waits at peak hours. Sundae Ilbeonji's line eases in the mid-afternoon; the other two are busiest at their respective meal peaks (Ildeung Sikdang even on weekday mornings).

Is there anywhere here I can walk in without much of a wait?

Mandu-ran and Mangwondong Kaljjamppong both turn tables quickly at normal lunch hours. Portrait Coffee Bar and Gongmyeong's chaekppang branch are newer cafés without the same queue reputation.

Do any of these need a reservation?

Almost — eight of the nine are walk-in. Uri Bada Susan is the exception, using CatchTable remote queueing. The three with long waits (Sundae Ilbeonji, Ildeung Sikdang, Ichizen) don't take bookings either; timing your visit around off-peak hours is the only lever.

How recent is the café side of this list?

Both cafés here are recent by the neighborhood's standard — Portrait Coffee Bar since 2020, Gongmyeong's Mangwon branch since 2025 — next to soup shops old enough that no one can pin an exact opening date on them.
